Golf vs. Baseball

A player’s ball striking ability depends a lot on their posture at set-up.  Now matter how talented may be, they are not any good without the proper starting position.

Having a good posture gives a player the appearance of an athlete and a good start on making a solid swing.  Players who have good posture have their spine kept fairly straight and the knees comfortably flexed.  They bend from their waist and their arms are naturally hanging from the shoulders. (Tiger Tips 5)

The amount of bending from the waist depends on the height.  Taller players tend to have to bend more than shorter players do.  Ian Woosnam, who is only 5’3”, does not have to bend a lot because of his height.

The average width of the stance is the same width apart as the shoulders. However, this is not always the case.  Some golfers have their feet wider than usual or narrower than usual.

A wide stance is not good for a golfer who has difficulty shifting weight to the right side in the backswing.  A slightly narrower stance than normal makes the task easier.  The same could be said for shifting weight in the downswing.  A narrower stance can also be good for the golfer who over swing at the top of the backswing.  Conversely, the taller player needs a slightly wider base than the person of more average height does.
